Step 1: Go to settings by typing Settings in the search bar next to Start button, and press Enter. Step 2: Click on System option from the window, and select Default apps from the left side panel of the screen.

Step 3: Under Choose Default apps, Click on + symbol under Email option to set a mail app as your default browser. Hope this helps!

My question is: when I set the default client to 'Mail', why isn't the registry key 'Computer HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Clients Mail' set to 'Mail' as the default client? It shows 'Microsoft Outlook' even after I switch the default client to 'Mail.'

I too have had this problem. Going into Settings/system/default apps/mail does not show my email client in the options. I too need to find out where the default email client is stored and its values.

In order to find out what the default email client is, I found the same information over and over again: Look at the default string in HKLM Software Clients Mail. (see for example this related question). However, this seems not to be true for all OSs and/or situations: I have two machines running Win7 64bit, let's call them A and B. I am using Office 2010 Home and Business and Outlook 2010 is my mail client. This is a relatively new pc and has Office 365 (2016) installed as well. After a recent Windows Update, my default mail client changed to Outlook 2016 -- one of my apps that sends mail stopped working, mail profile missing error).

When I try to set my default mail client via the UI, only Outlook 2016 is showing; I can't select Outlook 2010. I uninstalled Office 365 but Outlook 2010 still does not show up in the UI as a default program. Now I need to find out how to change this in the registry. The OS is Windows 10 Home.

Computingbitstogo, If you have lost your Office product key then can find it while Office is still installed. In the results page, scroll down to its Software Licenses section to see applications & their product keys. You can have much finer control over setting default applications at Start menu, Windows system, Control panel, [in the upper-right, set View by to Small icons, just so you can see everything], Default programs. 1 You can then try Default programs first and set the required version of Microsoft Office Outlook using Set this program as default so it handles all the file types & protocols it was designed for.

2 You can also use Associate a file type or protocol with a program. • File types are at the top of the list & protocols at the bottom. • Scroll down to almost the end and select the MailTo protocol then click on Change program. And if the choices cannot all be shown at once scroll down & select More apps then scroll down the next list and choose Look for another app on this PC if necessary - this lets you browse to your chosen version's.exe file.

3 You can also use Associate a file type or protocol with a program in a slightly different way. • The columns are sortable so click on the Current default column to sort them into alphabetical order. • File types and protocols lists remain separate so you have to check in each section to see them all. • Scroll down the file types list to the entries for Mail and then for Microsoft Office Outlook and sue the Change program procedure for each of them to make sure they are pointing at the Outlook version you want. • Scroll right down to the bottom to the protocols section of the list and do the same.
